Pastoral Care Week. October 25-30

<Note from CPSP>

Pastoral Care Week (PCW) is just around the corner (October 25-31, 2015) and this year the theme is “Spiritual Care Together.”  This year, PCW has partnered with a new vendor and their merchandise site (https://pastoralcare.geigershops.com/) is now open for business, with a simplified shopping cart and payment system.  Additionally, there is a full-service customer care department with a toll-free number (1-800-318-3849.  It is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM EST).  Most orders will ship within 48 hours (to a physical address – no post office boxes!).

Pastoral Care Week (http://www.pastoralcareweek.org/) celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and its rich history can be found at http://www.pastoralcareweek.org/origins.html) .  PCW later affiliated with the COMISS Network (of which CPSP is a member).  And CPSP’s own Linda Walsh-Garrison, BCCC, is the immediate Past-Chair of the Pastoral Care Week initiative, having served that role in a splendid fashion for several years.

“Spiritual Care Together” focuses on holistic care of the individual and the need to work collaboratively across disciplines to meet the biological, psychological, social and spiritual needs of those for whom we provide care.  We seek this opportunity to dialogue, educate, support and join together in understanding the spiritual and/or religious needs that impact the physical and mental wellbeing of individuals as we join with them in their journey toward healing and wholeness.

Please take a look at the PCW website and see what merchandise might assist you in promoting our profession, as well as calling attention to your department’s vital role within your institution.

Cordially,

Dave Plummer, BCCC, DPP
Past-Chair, COMISS Network

Humanitarian Aid: Caring for Those Who Care for Others

My hat goes off to humanitarian aid workers serving in the world’s neediest places as they face the very threats that call for their help: war, terrorism, poverty, disease, natural disasters, and the list goes on.

My heart goes out to them, too, as they face not only those dangers, but mental and emotional stresses, as well.

Outer Turmoil

In their latest “Aid Worker Security Report,” Humanitarian Outcomes announced that 2013 marked an all-time high for the number of civilian aid workers who were victims of violence. The 460, an increase of 66% over the previous year, were the targets of 251 separate attacks, including shootings, kidnappings, bodily assaults, and explosives.

Those working in their own countries accounted for the vast majority, 87%, of the victims, but the 13% who were expats represented a greater rate of attack, as they made up less than 8% of workers in the field.

JUNE CPE

We plan to have a Clinical Pastoral Education training starting on June 23. This will probably be a half unit only. However, if some are looking for a full unit, we are open to discussing the possibility.

Group time will be for 8 Saturdays (for the half unit).

CPE is practical training for pastoral in a hospital and community setting. If you have any questions, contact us at info@bukallife.org.

Honest Christianity – chaplaincy and the local church

Renewal

This week I was invited to speak at what was a reasonably unique event in my experience. Itwas not the theme that was unusual – I often get asked to speak about bereavement. It was not even the group – volunteer chaplains. It was that the training session on bereavement for volunteer chaplains was being run by a local church as a part of a wider training programme.

It is the vision of Renewal Church in Solihull to develop their members to reach out in their
local community. Chaplaincy is perceived as an effective way to serve the local community and is part of the mission strategy of the church. Church members care, listen, serve people where they are to be found in places they have gone to willingly or unwillingly – GP surgeries, playing sports, hospitals and hospices, schools… The training is helping them to be intentional and purposeful…

CPE Summer Intensive (Mar-May) 2015

Trying to figure out how many have committed to do CPE this Summer starting March 16 (or April 8th for half unit). We are coming up with 10 for full unit and 8 for half unit. That is the largest number since 2011. But the number may still go up or down. They will be split between Celia Munson, Dr. Paul Tabon, and Jehny Pedazo.

Any questions, concerns, and such, contact at info@bukallife.org, or bukallife@gmail.com.

Also looking into having another unit starting, perhaps in June… maybe July. Looking into the possibiliy that this unit will focus more on palliative care, due to the growth of need in this area in the Baguio area. Will keep you update.

January Updates

We have been very busy with many guests coming by for various reasons. Exciting times, but it is now time to get back into leading training.
1.  Regular Summer CPE starts March 16th. It will be supervised by Celia Munson (myself), as well as Dr. Paul Tabon. 11 weeks long
2.  Half Unit Summer CPE will start in April (exact date to be determined). It will be supervised by Jehny Pedazo. It will be approximately 6 weeks..
3.  CPO (Introduction to CPE). Starts this Monday (1pm-6pm) at Bukal Life Care Office. Lasts 6 weeks.

All of these program plan to have palliative care and disaster response sub-specialties incorporated into them. Both Intensive and half unit CPE are certified by CPSP-PHilippines (and CPSP).
.
4.  Disaster Response 4-day intensive. May 13-16. This is a partnership between PBTS, Bukal Life Care, and Virginia Baptist Disaster Response.
