CPE and More in October 2018
On October 15 we started a new CPE group. We have 6 trainees. They have Vo and Lyn as SITs for the trainees. The left image below is on the first day of CPE. We also have 3 trainees for CPO led by Bob and Celia.
The right picture was taken in the office of Dr. Pagara, dean of the School of Theology at Central Philippine University. We were meeting with Dr. Cal Sodoay, a partner in CPE. The picture includes Doc Cal, Celia, Bob, Doc Gibbs, and Dr. Pagara. The trip, including Doc Lyn, and several CPE members in Iloilo was on October 4-7.

Church Conflict Training
Training was held by our team (Bob and Celia, Lyn, Fhey, and Daniel) with LUBCA at First Baptist Church, San Fernando, La Union.
The training involved a conflict-related team-building exercise, followed by a simple test regarding conflict management styles. The following is the presentation we used.
August Updates
- We recently hosted a certification board of CPSP-Philippines. On July 28, we had several reviewed. Three were three granted certification for Clinical Chaplaincy: Ptr. Janice Serafica, Ptr. Renato Eustaquio, and Dr. Merlita Montecastro. Additionally one was granted Associate Clinical Chaplaincy: Daniel Spaeth.
- We are considering having a new half unit of CPE starting on August 20. However, we are seeking to verify that we have enough trainees. If you are interested, please email us at bukallife@gmail.com. Otherwise, our next course is in October. This will be a full unit extended.
- August 27 we will be holding a short seminar in San Fernando, La Union on Conflict resolution.
Busy Weekend at Bukal Life Care
Friday, we held our CPE commissioning for half unit trainees. They began their training 6 weeks ago in early June. There are 14 trainees, 10 of whom were doing half unit intensive. The 10 are Matthew, Jaymar, Ely, Eleazar, Claribel, Bhab, Shoneem, Charles, Nap, and Jerry. Most are associated with Philippine Baptist Theollogical Seminary or Lutheran Theological Seminary. Their supervisors (SITs) are Chaplains Vo and Edgar. Chaplain Celia is supervising the other four who will complete their work in September.
Many joined the celebration which culminated with a dinner social at the Bukal Life Care Office. We were blessed with some special guests. These include Dr. Armand Canoy the president of PBTS, and Dr. Aloysius Schwartz, OT professor of LTS. Additionally, Dr. Sim Dang-Awan Jr. spoke briefly on military chaplaincy, and Ptr. Renato Eustaquio spoke briefly on Marketplace (or Corporate) Chaplaincy.
Today, Saturday, we are have certification board for four. These four have completed four (4) units of CPE and are seeking certification in clinical chaplaincy.

New Pastoral Care Book
Congratulations to Dr. Sim Dang-Awan Jr, for the publishing of his book, “Pastoral Care Response to Alcoholism in the Armed Forces of the Philippines.” It is the first book published under “CPSP-Philippines,” and is the book form of his doctoral dissertation. We hope that in the next few weeks we will have some copies in our office for purchase. For now, it is available (both in paper and kindle form) HERE
Doc Sim, among his many other activities and accomplishments, is the president of the board of trustees of Bukal Life Care.
Pastoral Care Training Partnership
Our counseling center has a partnership with Philippine Baptist Theological Seminary, particularly in terms of the Clinical Pastoral Education program. More recently, the partnership has expanded to developing degree programs focusing on pastoral care. This work has been aided through further partnerships with specialists.
Bob wrote an article for the Fellowship of Baptist Educators that speaks to this partnership. The newsletter is attached.
