November 20 Activities
This was a busy day for us.
A. We had a training session at CRC Hall in Baguio with the CBCP Center for Women and Children. The topic: “Basic Skills and Theory of Pastoral Counseling and Psychotherapy”. 43 attended from over 20 organizations, including DSWD, Couples for Christ, and the Soroptomist Club. Training was led by Rev. Joel Aguirre, BLCCC Executive Director.
B. On the same day, had training workshop on “Church-based Member Care for Missionaries”. This was held at Philippine Baptist Theological Seminary. This is part of Asia Vision-STM’s Leadership Development Program. This is our 2nd year of involvement in their program. Over 40 attended. Celia Munson (BLCCC Director of Training) was the trainer, with a bit of help from her husband Bob (BLCCC Administrator).
Training Aids
Adding new training aids. Latest is “Integrative Steps of Learning and Growth”. This is a powerpoint on education theory as it rates to wholistic growth.
New CPE term starting 2010
CPT/CPE, 2010 4th batch starts October 18, going to December 10. If you are interested (or at least curious), please email us at info@bukallife.org
Mid-June Updates
Just completed the graduation for CPE on Tuesday (June 15). On the 14th had the orientation of the CPE-Extended. This is 240 hour training (versus the normal 400 hour) training in pastoral care practicum. There are 5 students. These include people from 5 different denominations (Catholic, Episcopalian, CAMA, Assemblies of God, and Fundamental Baptist). We believe this diversity should add to the educational value of the training.
Disaster Relief Chaplain Graduation
Congratulations to the graduates of the 2-week Disaster Relief Chaplain class. They are Ptr. Joel Angiwan, Miguela Beltran, Ptr. Arsenio Dayrit, Rowena Flores, and Celia Munson. As we seek certification to work in disaster areas we pray that they will use their training and heart to provide comfort and hope for those in suffering.
Comdev Class completed
The 3-day “Church-based Community Development” class completed today with 19 finishing the course. It is introductory in nature but covered many of the major aspects of the theory and practice of church-based COMDEV. Bob Munson led the training, supported by the technical expertise of Rene Gabaldon and Gerry Escobar. Flor Salas did a wonderful job caring for the lunches and meriendas. It is hoped that this training will lead to COMDEV projects sprouting up in multiple communities.

April 24 Symposium
Pastoral Care Symposium at University of Cordilleras on April 24 (all day). Lead speaker will be Chaplain Charlie Benton of the Virginia Baptist Disaster Relief Team. This symposium will focus on counselors, while the May 1st event (at Calvary Baptist Church, Baguio City) will focus on Church leaders.
More details to follow.
What Does Shepherd’s Oikos Do?
Training:
1. Shepherd in Every Pew. Provides a simple format look at pastoral counseling with the goal of having helping church members be an effective part of the pastoral care ministry of a church.
2. Disaster Response Counseling. Provides training for counselors to effectively provide relief to disaster victims through counseling leading to stress mitigation and finding “a new normal”. Focuses primarily on the NOVA model.
3. Introduction to Pastoral Care and Counseling. Somewhat like Shepherd in Every Pew, but less targeted. Provides a basic understanding of the purpose and methods of pastoral care.
4. Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). We work with Philippine Baptist Theological Seminary (PBTS) and the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy (CPSP) in this. Rev. Joel Aguirre is the head of Shepherd’s Oikos, as well as the CPE Supervisor at PBTS.
4. We are regularly expanding in this area… adding new training as the need arises.
Symposium:
1. Our first Shepherd’s Oikos Pastoral Care Seminar was in 2009 with Dr. Raymond Lawrence (General Secretary of the College of Pastoral Care and Psychotherapy) as our lead speaker. This year, our 2nd annual symposium will be on May 1st (2010) with Rev. Charlie Benton (Virginia Baptist Mission Board Disaster Response Trainer) as the lead speaker.
Literature:
1. We are hoping to begin developing materials contextualized for the Philippines. We are also looking to develop an electronic journal.
Practical Ministry:
1. We look to help people who are suffering by providing pastoral care services. We started this by working with hospitals and shelters (through CPE) as well as with Disaster Relief (after Typhoon Pepeng in November 2009).
